Eligibility

Admission requirements for Canada

College programs often ask for IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall; universities 6.5–7.0. Since November 2024, PGWP applicants also need minimum language scores (CLB 7 for university degree graduates, CLB 5 for college graduates) at the time of the PGWP application.

Undergraduate (bachelor's)

  • Class 12 with 60–85%+ depending on university/college
  • English: IELTS 6.0–6.5 (no band below 5.5–6.0) or equivalent
  • Prerequisite subjects (e.g., Maths, Physics for engineering)
  • Personal profile or supplementary application for some universities

Postgraduate (master's / MBA)

  • Bachelor's degree: 4-year degrees preferred for master's; 3-year degrees often fit PG diplomas
  • English: IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0) is common for master's
  • Statement of Purpose and 2 references
  • Resume; work experience for MBA and some management programs
  • GRE/GMAT for selected programs

Student visa

Canada Study Permit: process and documents

Most new applicants need a Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) along with the letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). The application is online; you then give biometrics in India. The Student Direct Stream (SDS) closed in November 2024, so all applicants now use the regular stream.

Documents checklist

  • Letter of acceptance from a DLI
  • Provincial / Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL), if required for your program
  • Valid passport
  • Proof of funds: tuition paid or available, plus living costs (GIC, bank statements, loan)
  • Statement of purpose / study plan explaining your choice
  • Academic documents and English test scores
  • Upfront medical exam (if requested)
  • Biometrics

Step-by-step visa process

  1. 01

    Get your acceptance and PAL/TAL

Your college or university requests the attestation letter from the province where required.

  2. 02

    Arrange funds

Many students buy a GIC and pay first-year tuition to strengthen their file.

  3. 03

    Write a clear study plan

Explain why this program, why Canada, and how it fits your career — consistently with your background.

  4. 04

    Apply online

Submit your study permit application with fees through the IRCC portal.

  5. 05

    Biometrics and medicals

Give biometrics at a VFS centre and complete the medical exam if requested.

  6. 06

    Decision and port of entry

If approved you receive a letter of introduction; the actual study permit is issued when you land.

Work rights

Working in Canada during and after your studies

While you study

Up to 24 hours per week off campus during academic sessions, and full-time during scheduled breaks such as winter and summer holidays. On-campus work has no hourly limit for eligible students.

After graduation

  • Check PGWP eligibility before you accept an offer — not every program qualifies.
  • Language test results (CLB 7 for degrees, CLB 5 for college programs) are needed for the PGWP application.
  • Canadian work experience can count towards Express Entry and provincial nominee programs.

FAQs

Study in Canada: frequently asked questions

Yes, for students who choose the right program. Caps, PAL/TAL letters and new PGWP rules make program and institution choice more important. Universities and PGWP-eligible college programs remain strong options.

A Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter confirms you are counted within that province's study permit allocation. Most new study permit applicants need one; your school requests it for you. Rules for master's and PhD applicants have changed more than once, so check the current requirement.

Not since SDS closed, but a GIC is still one of the clearest ways to show living funds and is recommended by many counsellors.

First-year tuition plus about CAD 22,895 for living costs (single applicant), plus travel costs. More is required if family members accompany you.

Yes, up to 24 hours per week off campus during academic sessions and full-time in scheduled breaks, if your study permit allows work.

University bachelor's, master's and PhD programs are generally eligible. College and other non-degree programs must be in an eligible field of study on IRCC's list. We verify this before you apply.

Canadian education and work experience can strengthen Express Entry and PNP profiles, but PR is not automatic. Language scores, skilled work experience and program choice all matter.

Spouses can accompany you, but open work permits are now mainly available to spouses of master's students (programs of 16+ months), PhD students and certain professional programs.

Universities offer degrees and research; colleges offer practical, shorter programs. With current PGWP rules, college programs must be in eligible fields — so the choice depends on your career goals and eligibility.

Not always for admission, but you will need an accepted English test score for PGWP later. Most students take IELTS, PTE, TOEFL or CAEL.

Roughly ₹15–35 lakh per year including tuition and living, depending on program type and city.

We check PGWP and PAL eligibility, shortlist universities and colleges, help with SOP and study plan, plan GIC and loans, review your study permit file and prepare you for arrival.
