Education system
US degrees use a semester credit system. A typical master's needs 30–36 credits; a bachelor's about 120. Many graduate programs expect 16 years of education, but a growing number of universities now accept 3-year Indian bachelor's degrees — we check this for every shortlisted program.
| Qualification | Duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Associate degree | 2 years | Community colleges; can transfer into year 3 of a bachelor's |
| Bachelor's (BS / BA / BBA) | 4 years | Broad first year, then a declared major |
| Master's (MS / MA / MEng) | 1–2 years | Thesis and non-thesis tracks; STEM designation matters for OPT |
| MBA | 1–2 years | Usually needs 2–5 years of work experience and GMAT/GRE |
| PhD | 4–6 years | Usually fully funded through research or teaching assistantships |
| Intake | When to apply | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fall (Aug/Sep) | Applications Sep – Feb | Largest intake, most programs and funding |
| Spring (Jan) | Applications Jun – Oct | Good option for many MS programs; fewer assistantships |
| Summer (May) | Applications Dec – Mar | Limited, mostly selected master's programs |

Student visa
The F-1 visa is for full-time academic study at a SEVP-certified school. After admission, the university issues Form I-20; you pay the SEVIS fee, complete the DS-160, book appointments and attend an interview at a US Embassy or Consulate in India (New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kolkata).
| Visa detail | Current information |
|---|---|
| Visa application (MRV) fee | US$185 (check for any additional fees introduced in 2025–26) |
| SEVIS I-901 fee | US$350 |
| Earliest visa issue | Up to 365 days before the program start date |
| Earliest entry to the US | 30 days before the I-20 start date |
| Typical processing | Mostly decided on the interview day; wait times for slots vary by season |
Accept the offer, submit financial documents to the university and receive the I-20.
Pay the I-901 SEVIS fee online and save the receipt.
Fill the online application carefully — details must match your I-20 and documents.
Pay the visa fee, then book the OFC (biometrics) and consular interview slots.
Practise clear answers on your course choice, university, funding and plans after graduation.
If approved, your passport is returned with the F-1 visa; you can enter up to 30 days before the I-20 start date.
Work rights
On-campus jobs up to 20 hours a week while classes are in session and full-time during official breaks. Off-campus work related to your program is possible through CPT (Curricular Practical Training) when it is part of the curriculum.
OPT (Optional Practical Training) gives 12 months of work authorisation after graduation. Graduates of STEM-designated programs can apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension — up to 36 months in total. Many employers then sponsor an H-1B or other work visa.

FAQs
Yes, for most STEM, business and research profiles it remains the strongest destination for career outcomes, especially with up to 3 years of STEM OPT. The key is choosing programs with good placement records and planning finances realistically.
Yes. Many US universities now accept 3-year Indian degrees for master's programs, especially from NAAC A/A+ accredited colleges. Others require 16 years of education, so you may need a one-year PG diploma or a bridge course. We check this program by program.
No. A large number of universities have made GRE optional or waived it. However, a good GRE score (especially Quant 160+) still helps for competitive programs, scholarships and assistantships.
Total cost including tuition and living expenses typically ranges from about ₹35 lakh at affordable public universities to ₹80 lakh or more at private universities in expensive cities, before scholarships or assistantships.
You need liquid funds covering at least the first year's cost shown on your I-20 (tuition + living). Proof can be a mix of savings, fixed deposits, an education loan sanction letter and scholarships, plus evidence of funds for the remaining years.
Yes. Most US universities accept TOEFL and many accept Duolingo or PTE. Some waive English tests for students with English-medium education, but the visa officer may still expect strong spoken English at the interview.
Common questions cover why you chose the university and course, your academic background, who is funding your education, your sponsor's income, and what you plan to do after graduation. Answers should be honest, specific and consistent with your documents.
CPT is work authorisation during your program, linked to your curriculum (like an internship). OPT is mainly used after graduation — 12 months, plus a 24-month extension for STEM degrees.
Fall offers the most programs, scholarships and assistantships. Spring is a good option if your scores or documents are not ready for Fall, and visa slots are often easier to get.
Yes, your spouse and children can accompany you on F-2 visas if you show additional funds. F-2 spouses cannot work in the US, but can study part-time.
Popular choices include Boston, the Bay Area, Seattle, New York, Dallas, Austin, Chicago and Atlanta. Texas, Arizona and the Midwest often give a better cost-to-salary balance.
We handle profile evaluation, university shortlisting, SOP/LOR guidance, applications, I-20 coordination, education loan and proof-of-funds planning, F-1 mock interviews and pre-departure support.
